Liquid Crystalline Properties of Symmetric and Asymmetric End-Grafted Cellulose Nanocrystals

چکیده
The hydrophilic polymer poly[2-(2-(2-methoxy ethoxy)ethoxy)ethylacrylate] (POEG3A) was grafted onto the reducing end-groups (REGs) of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) allomorphs, and their liquid crystalline properties were investigated. REGs on CNCs extracted from I (CNC-I) are exclusively located at one end crystallite, whereas II (CNC-II) feature both ends so that grafting affords asymmetrically symmetrically decorated CNCs, respectively. To confirm REG modification, several complementary analytical techniques applied. POEG3A CNC evidenced by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, coil–globule conformational transition this above 60 °C, i.e., its lower critical solution temperature. Furthermore, we investigated self-assembly end-tethered CNC-hybrids into chiral nematic phases. Above a concentration, end-grafted allomorphs form tactoids. introduction to CNC-I does not disturb surface along rods, allowing modified approach each other helicoidal textures. End-grafted CNC-II formed tactoids with pitch observable polarized optical microscopy. This is likely due increase in hydrodynamic radius or introduced steric stabilization polymer.

Preparation and liquid crystalline properties of spherical cellulose nanocrystals.
A novel kind of spherical cellulose nanocrystal (SCNC) suspension was prepared by hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose with a mixture of sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid under ultrasonic treatment. The mechanism of SCNC formation and the liquid crystalline properties of their suspensions were investigated. A suspension of spherical particles was usually inclined to form crystallization c...

Physical properties of composite materials can be pre-engineered by controlling their structure and composition at the mesoscale. However, approaches to achieving this are limited and rarely scalable. We introduce a new breed of self-assembled nematogels formed by an orientationally ordered network of thin cellulose nanofibers infiltrated with a thermotropic nematic fluid. The interplay between...
متن کاملCellulose nanocrystals: synthesis, functional properties, and applications
Cellulose nanocrystals are unique nanomaterials derived from the most abundant and almost inexhaustible natural polymer, cellulose. These nanomaterials have received significant interest due to their mechanical, optical, chemical, and rheological properties. Cellulose nanocrystals primarily obtained from naturally occurring cellulose fibers are biodegradable and renewable in nature and hence th...

the aim of this study was to investigate the barrier properties of cellulose nanocrystals-pvananocomposites. nanocomposite films with different filler loading levels (3, 6, 9 and 12% by wt) weredeveloped by solvent casting method. the effect of cellulose nanocrystals on the barrier properties ofthe nanocomposites was studied. to this end, moisture absorption, water vapor permeability (wvp),oxyg...
متن کاملNanotribology of Symmetric and Asymmetric Liquid Lubricants
When liquid molecules are confined in a narrow gap between smooth surfaces, their dynamic properties are completely different from those of the bulk. The molecular motions are highly restricted and the system exhibits solid-like responses when sheared slowly. This solidification behavior is very dependent on the molecular geometry (shape) of liquids because the solidification is induced by the ...
